PowerPoint freezing when clicking on link to a PDF file

Several students are facing an issue, whereby PowerPoint will completely lock-up and freeze, after clicking on an inserted link to a PDF file. We are using Office 2007, and the PDF files in question are hosted within the students' homedrive. This issue also occurs even when logged in as a domain admin, but the PDF files open with no issue, when outside of PowerPoint. Any ideas?

Or try to open powerpoint in openoffice impress then save it and then repon it in powerpoint, is it on a specific file or does it happen on all of them? Does the same thing happen when opening a powerpoint that is stored locally with administrator?
