New Xbox requires an always-on connection to block used games

Possibly. Google isn't really helping too much.

[off-topic] What's Deadspace like? I've never played it. [i just ordered the PC version of Deadspace 3 for my uncle as a late Christmas present.]

Deadspace on console with surround sound is great, Deadspace 2 is alright but no where near as good, haven't bothered with three yet as they have gone all angry birds on it and they can keep it. Alan Wake is another good one and the original Bioshock is good too.

And

Halo 4

Halo ODST

Deadspace 2

Bioshock 2 - I think

There are more I'm sure.

forza 4

From the sounds of it, it'll be built-in.

But, think about it.

Mandatory internet connection.

Mandatory camera.

I can see Microsoft having something to scan the room/gamer to create targeted ads... Or even, check it's the same person playing.[/Tin-Hat]

How does Forza make use of Kinnect?

you pretend to hold a steering wheel and drive but i meant forza is 2 discs never tried it it seems a silly idea

OMG! I can't think of anything worse for a "realistic" driving game! Please Sony never make Gran Tourismo require PS Move.

Mandatory kinect, this is a problem for people that DONT have the space. We had to completely re-arrange our front room to get the space needed for the kinect configuration. So, covering the sensor bar and not using it, problem solved. I prefer to use a controller to holding my arms out for an invisible steering wheel!

As for always on connections, in the western world, this should not be a problem, always on broadband (either by copper or fibre) is there for every household now. If you have a landline telephone, you can have broadband.

Mandatory installs of games? GOOD!! I install every game I play, and the installation has made the game load quicker and play smoother, I have a selection of 6 installed on my HDD at any one point, If I complete a game or max out the achievements, then I uninstall the game and move onto the next and trade in the game (Bourne Conspiracy, Sega Collection etc).

worse but at least funny is a driving game using a dance mat lol. but yes its like racing games on a tablet or mariokart wii with that wheel i gave that up quickly too and used a controller much less frustrating

Wii... Mario Kart...

Also, 3DS Mario Kart.

It actually works pretty well.

Also, regarding my previous comment:

What's more, the Kinect camera sensor will be able to pick up six individual "skeletons" occupying one room at the same time, anytime. There's definite "we're watching you" implications with this, including possible relation to a newly-patented Microsoft system that monitors and possibly charges users "based on who is watching what."

God dammit Microsoft!

The required Kinect may well be related to the IllumiRoom concept they've been bouncing about:

Also, Mario Kart Wii with the steering wheel was a PITA. Far too imprecise and prone to suddenly deciding you were steering the other way. Good for a laugh, maybe, but no use if you actually want to play.

Just because it isnt required does not mean it will have to be used, just a more attractive dev target. Also the new connect sensors for PCs have better optics and work in much closer, the 720 one is newer so should be fine for smaller spaces.

@x13 the 360 takes usb storage now as memory cards are gone as of the 360 slim.

I know. It was still a [censored?] move though.

And moving to USB just looks like they knew the courts would take Datel's side, so they made them obsolete another way.

Been lurking on this thread for a while. All I can say now is I won't be buying a next-gen console. At all. The WiiU doesn't look too bad, but I'd honestly never use it. Sony's PS3 and its confirmed always-on DRM and no-game-sharing can $profanity off.

Microsoft's Xbox 720, even if it doesn't have always-on DRM, it seems nigh-confirmed that it WILL require Kinect and WILL require games to be 'installed' (which I suspect will be less 'installed' and more 'copied contests from game disk to local hard disk). Now, I don't mind installing games on my PC with my brand new 2TB HDD, that's fine-and-dandy. But it defeats the concept of 'put disk in, play game instantly' that (I feel) helped raise consoles to their popularity. The optional install for faster load times was a great idea, but let's just keep it optional. The mandatory Kinect seems pointless. The Xbox has always marketed at the less casual end of the market, IMO, and motion control, in my experiences, is often seen as 'just a gimmick' by the less casual gamers. Perhaps it's not, maybe it's the best thing since sliced bread and we're all wrong about it, but forcing it on us isn't the right way to make us see that. My 360 Elite isn't hooked up to the internet. I like it that way. I don't play games online with my 360 - and I like my gaming devices (such as both the PC's in the house) to be hardwired to the router because my wireless gets a lot of jitter. I've only laid 2 cable runs and I don't want to be swapping cables around from my PC to my (hypothetical) 720 each time I want to play a game (single-player!)

These are all - individually - minor gripes. But it's minor inconvenience after minor inconvenience and, to me, they're all starting to stack up. I consider 'always on DRM' to be a stupid idea and I feel it's - in part - to do with data collection about usage rather than anti-piracy. The no-resell is both immoral and illegal as far as I'm concerned, so I'm very much against that. I like a controller, I don't like being forced to install games when half the appeal of a console, to me, is the fact you don't have to install games, and grumble grumble grumble moan moan whine whine.

This is all, I stress, my opinions. Some people aren't bothered about always-on DRM because their devices are always connected anyway, and I understand that. Some people aren't going to be fussed about the mandatory installs because they already do it for their PC games, or their xbox games all get installed anyway for quicker loading. Maybe I'm just being a whiny sod. I just feel it's not for me due to the direction they're taking it.

Won't somebody think of the children?

Just thought I'd pop that in there! I've also been lurking and agree with all the anti-DRM "whining". I rarely play the xbox, now that it's in the stepson's room, but should he want a 720 in the future, and it ALWAYS needs a connection to play games, where does that leave internet child security? At the moment, he has a small window of opportunity to play online (6.30-9-30pm), after that the router switches his web feed off, and although he CAN play offline, he chooses not to. This was implemented to get him to do homework, etc, etc.

Now, it seems that this will be stymied by Microsoft wanting it to be always on. This would be unacceptable to me, as a parent, as it takes away a level of control.

I also have an issue with child use but from another angle. I have young children and removed the kinect device as they are going through a phase of walking around the house without any clothes on. Does not mater how often you put the clothes on them, before you know it they have removed them. It did not sit well with me having them walk in front of a camera (kinect) switched on that is connected to a device which is connected to the internet.

I'm sure Kinect is fine with that [Presently.]

Microsoft don't want to be sued for accidental child pornography.

Seems to be very creepy, esp when you tie it in with their patents regarding scanning how many people you have in front of TV this, the locking off of games was to be expected though, considering the console makers hate the whole "second hand resale" market.

Only thing I think it will do being too far OTT with this RL DRM is stop people being interested in the video games.

What's that sound in the distance?

Reckon it could be the death knell for console gaming....

Does anyone think any of this is a good idea? Kill the 2nd-hand market...kill the console. My stepson would no longer be able to trade in games for the newest release. He'd have to wait for Xmas and birthdays, and I don't think teenagers are built with patience pre-installed. That's more of an early-20's download!

Have you played on a Wii U? They are shocking...its difficult to keep up with what to focus on and it is just horrendous!

Yeah got to be honest, I played my brother-in-law's over Xmas and it was hard to stifle my "so what?"

The tablet doesn't add much in games I've seen so far; you still need to pause the game to look at the tablet screen, so there's not really any benefit over it not just being in an on screen menu, and the touch features are awkward - there's a Fruit Ninja clone on one of the discs he has and I just found it awkward to look at the TV whilst swiping randomly on the touch screen... the Wii-U, I think, tries to solve a problem nobody has, and creates more problems in the process.
