One of our staff asked me to look at her Advent 4213 netbook. The HDD has had it and the XP Home COA is rubbed away so there is no key. When I told her how much it would cost to put right she said it wasn't worth it and gave it to me. I have a spare drive I can use and XP Home on a bootable USB but without the key it's not a lot of use. I'd like to get it going for my granddaughter to use, whilst spending the least amount of money. Any recommendations please.

Try reinstalling windows on new drive. Provided the BIOS is setup correctly, any OEM key you use should work, as long as you use a official OEM disk for that laptop.

Research slic for more info

If you send whats left COA to Microsoft they will end you a new one back. I read this a few years ago, someone else had the same issue.

Take a look for a product key when you get into school on Monday?? :mod:

What about a Linux Distro?

We don't have XP Home in school. I have run the laptop using XP Pro and our VLK to make sure everything else was ok and the OEM drivers worked. I can get Windows 8 Pro through the LEA for £50 but I question if it's worth it.

I have considered Linux but it's for my granddaughter so there might be a support issue!

That's interesting. The label is too well stuck on and would come off in a pieces but I'll see if I can find out more. Maybe they'll accept a pic.

I also remember the saying if it comes off in bits thats ok, just send as much as you can. Providing you send more than 50% of it they will help.
