Other schools using tablets for Geography?

Our Geography department has invested in some Nexus 7 tablets and have started using them in class - initially as an on-line reference tool, which looks promising so far.

 

Wondering if Geography colleagues elsewhere are also using similar devices (preferably android) - and if we can compare notes on potential ideas (or apps) for their use in and out of the classroom - eg fieldtrips being an obvious example.

 

The benefit of others' experience (both good and bad) would be helpful - or simply a point of contact I can pass on to our HoD Geography.

Google Earth is the first app that springs to mind. Unless the N7 tablets are the 3G version, using them outside of school might be limited.

A couple of ideas so far -

Skitch - to annotate photos, maps etc (and Evernote to upload/share it - along with voice text and photo notes)

Google Tracks - to record journeys, field trip transects etc

and of course Google Docs/Drive to prepare docs, spreadsheets/graphs and presentations - collaboratively if need be (and to access them from PCs, home etc later)

MetOffice Weather / Eye In Sky Weather / Holo Compass - Self explanatory.

 

Camera Launcher for Nexus 7 - Enables you to access the front-facing camera outside of apps like Skitch.

 

Wolfram Alpha - There is a massive amount of info students can lookup with this app. The links below show some examples.

PressureNET - The Nexus 7 doesn't have a built-in barometer (like the Nexus 10), but this app might still be useful?

 

A global network of user-contributed atmospheric pressure readings. This data is displayed as markers on an embedded Google map, and users can view the data graphed over time.

Thanks. We are using CamTimer to give built in delay for taking pictures rather than try and press button from 'wrong' side. Just need to hold it really still! (or lean on something)
