Hello all

 

I am looking to impliment SIMS.NET and would like two servers

 

1) For running SIMS.NET itself and

2) for running the learning platform element

Have a look at at some of the Viglen Rackmounts.

Can't go wrong with HP DL360 G5's. Dual processors, slap in plenty of memory, couple of hard disks and redundant power supplies, couples with Lights Out 2 I'd say they're a good deal for the job.

Dell always seem to be the best for education, really cant beat their price for servers.

Ok thanks for the advice and just to hamper things slightly - will these drives:

be compatible with this server:

and if so how many drives would fit in each server. I think that they are compatible and three per sever would fit but would I need anything else or is the SCSI controller onboard sufficent.

 

Sorry everyone but hardware is not really my strongpoint.

Yeah looks fine but you'll need a RAID card too (Im assuming thats the purpose of having 3 drives)

Does the server not come with a RAID card? Yes that is the point but I thought the server came with one? Would you be able to point out a RAID card from Insight that would be compatible. Completely lost here :-)

By the specs the storage controller only supports Raid 0 or Raid 1.

 

If that is the price range you are looking for i'd suggest this Server

 

You may pay slightly more for the drives, but at least you wont have to buy the raid storage controller. How much budget you willing to spend?

... and i've just noticed they've got another free processor offer on, so you'd get 2 dual core processors. You just buy the processor and then send the invoice to HP promotions, they send you a cheque back.

You should really be buying IBM hard disks to go into an IBM chassis else you will end up with weirdness on the warranty front.

 

But as I said, the HP DL360 G5 would be my choice. I have a quote for onoe with 2 x Dual core 5140 Xeon processors (2.33Ghz 4Mb L2 cache, 1333Mhz FSB), 4GB Ram, 4x 72.8GB SAS 15k hdd's, dual PSU's and 3 year on site warranty for £2985. (This isn't including the rebates that HP regularly run on second processors etc... and is also about 3 months old)

 

You should be looking for 4Gb ram in any new server now.

If you don't, you are really kinda defeating the point of buying a branded server.

The HP one. I really can't afford to spend more than 2K per server at the moment I'm afraid.

With such a low budget, I would recommend looking at Dell or looking at unbranded machines.

 

Otherwise you will end up with a machine that will not be up to the task in too short a time.

I just had a fiddle with the Dell server site and specced up a 1950 with 2 x Dual core 5130 Xeon processors, 2GB Ram, 4 x 73Gb Hdd's, silver support (next business day onsite) for £2291. You would likely be able to get this much lower direct or via a reseller rather than the website.

Nope, this was via CSE (and a very similar quote via European Electronique). I always find the prices on Insight to be about 15% higher than both of these other suppliers.

We just got a dell with 2x dual core xeon 5310 with 4gb ram, 4x 130ish SAS hdd, dual psu, raid 5, 3yr warrenty etc etc etc. Basically as above but about 1.5 times better for about £2500. As i said, its *extreamly* difficult to beat dell for price.

Yeah just phone them up, we managed to get about 1/3 off doing this, which equated to around £1000 so not to be sniffed at!

Last month I got 2 DL380's 2x3GHz Dual Core, 4GB Ram, 3x 72.8GB,Raid 5, 3yr warranty for £2337; and 3 DL360s (same spec) for £1900.

 

I swear by HP at the moment. They've got some great quality machines. Not really a fan of Dell.
