Win7 : Smart Board : Not Recognised. HELP

We have a SMART Board 400 or 500,an old one! Connects via serial to USB. Just introduced a new Win7 Dell lappy into the classroom, but I cant get the board to be recognised by the lappy. I have tried both version 9.5 and 10 of the Smartboard software and all of the settings, but to no avail!

 

Can someone help me out please?

 

I think I need to find a serial to usb driver!

 

Any recommendations / suggestions greatly appreciated.

Are you using the smart usb to serial cable? Or have you just plugged a serial to usb connector on the end of the normal smart serial cable?

Have you tried this on an xp machine or another windows 7 machine to rule out the laptop. Also version 11 of the smartboard software is out. Not sure if the 400 series boards work with it but i know it works with windows 7 and the 500 series boards

Did you actually install the "product drivers" not the main notebook program? If it's brand new laptop, won't work with just notebook installed on USB.

 

10.8 for Windows - SMART Technologies

 

That's 10.8, but if you want 11 etc it's on their site too. Just assuming from youur comment you want the older one

Hopefully it's that, if so nice and simple

 

Did it before, spend ages trying to work it out, then realise you're just missing a bit which doesnt come with main notebook softare hehe.

If this doesn't resolve it take a look at the usb devices in Device Manager. You should have a specific Smart driver for the usb-serial converter but I've had instances where there was a generic driver in places and the Smart one wouldn't go over the top. If you only have the generic one, try removing it and rebooting with the board connected.

Hi Laser, the problem is i have no driver showing for this device.

I know this is three years old, and apologies for rebumping it, however, I've recently run into this problem with our SB580 boards. It would appear that when you install the "Smartboard cable" driver for me at least, it is not creating the COM port.

 

I run the driver uninstall command as per instructions from Smart Technologies, and then changed the USB port of the cable. Windows then re-detected the cable, and recommended a driver from Prolific. It would appear that they are using the Prolific PL2303 USB-to-Serial chips.

 

I grabbed the driver from here: Products and installed it. Went into the Smartboard control panel utility, ran the detection wizard and it found it instantly albeit we're using version 11 and it does say it is not supported but it does work as expected.

 

Hope this helps anyone coming across this problem in future.
