Running Mac OS in VirtualBox?

Not too sure where to post this, so dropped it here and someone can move if they deem it suitable.

 

The only experience with Mac's I have had is playing with them in Apple stores. As we are starting to see them pop up, I'd ideally like to get a bit of basic knowledge behind me but without the expense of actually paying out for a Mac! I've done a bit of Googeling and found a few guides but have had no luck with any of them, so was wondering if any Edugeekers have successfully got a Mac OS running successfully in VirtualBox? And if so, how? Any links to know working guidance, hits or general tips would be appreciated!

I dont think the licence on the OS allows you to lawfully install it on a non Apple machine.

I should have put two and two together when I heard people referring to PC's running a Mac OS as a "hackintoshs".

OSX Server is allowed to be virtualized but I don't know if it would work under virtualbox? I've dabbled before with virtual mac (and natively installed OSX on an Intel based laptop) - the best way I've found is to google some "hackintosh" software.

 

iAtKos is the one I tried which was Snow Leopard

Just to be clear - Yes OS X will run in a Virtual Machine. Yes (I believe) it will run in VirtualBox. But you can only do so on a Apple branded computer as per the EULA for OS X.

 

The very name "hackintosh" should give some clue as to Apple feelings (and the legality) of running OS on non Apple branded hardware

Mountain Lion works quite well in VMware Workstation 9.0, although it's not as good as a real Mac.

Of course, I certainly wouldn't recommend doing this in a production environment or anything else - more of a 'bit of a dabble at home' kind of venture. Just to get the feel for it.

 

Do you have to modify Mountain Lion in any way to make it work? Or does it just do it??

At home I use VMware Player 8.0 on Ubuntu and Lion runs fine, including EFI network boot, however I have had no such luck with Virtualbox.
