Yes. I posted that yesterday and I cannot overstate how important this is and I have been waiting years for this release.

 

Not only does this mean that you don't need to run windows domain controllers, it effectively means that all those annoying restrictions in windows such as only being allowed to deploy .msi files are done away with because the python bindings will integrate with whatever you wish. No more obscure error codes, no more rubbish and expensive 'support' from Microsoft.

 

We'll probably start a test migration in the new year.

I'm not so sure, posts by Jeremy Allison on Slashdot reveal MS were quite supportive - although this was all backed up by EU legislation calling for MS to open their protocols.

Besides, MS just seem to care about tablets and the cloud now.

Hmmm.... I thought their main revenue was from corporate stuff - Server, Exchange and Office. I might be wrong though.

 

As for tablets, I keep an eye on this guy's blog - he's not optimistic about MS's chances on the tablet front.

MS isn't going to lose it's base in the corporate world as most companies will not want to retrain all their staff to support Linux based devices. Don't get me wrong I support Linux to the hilt but until the majority of Corporate Managers become brave enough to enter and embrace Linux the world will still be working on MS Exchange/SQL etc;

 

The Tablet / Smartphone world is totally different and there is a place for all three but obviously Android will always win hands down. There is a niche for Apple and MS devices though.

looking after samba AD is not any different than on windows as it uses all of the windows tools. It it s the AD protocols that they re-wrote, so you still get all the windows Group policy management, AD users and computers etc.

sure someone has to hit yum update once in a while, but most companies will have a few nix people anyway to look after their Oracle and Apache. Samba will get commercial support at a fraction of the cost of MS.

I was semi-thinking of reorganising my home server setup anyway, so now I'm thinking I'll do away with my Server 2003 VM and domain and install a Samba server instead.

Just a heads up from the known issues:

 

Replication of DNS data from one AD server to another may not work.

The DNS data used by the internal DNS server and bind9_dlz is stored in an application partition in our directory. The replication of this partition is not yet reliable.

Use of the internal dns is optional. There's nothing stopping using ISC BIND/DHCP (Which I imagine a few people do, I certainly have a couple of BIND servers here).
