Toshiba Satalite Pro A300-1EA Wired LAN Issue

Hi All,

 

A strange problem with the above laptop which is running windows XP Pro SP3 which im hoping you guys can help me out with.

 

The laptop is connected to our network via CAT5 and manges to get an IP address lease from our DHCP server without any issues. If I ping any hosts on the network in the office locally this works fine without any issues. The problem I have is that we have several offices which are connected to the same network which are all on the same subnet but unfortunately I can't ping or communicate with these nodes.

 

Likewise if I was to connect the laptop to the network in one of the remote offices I can ping\communicate with any other nodes locally but nothing on the other side of the switch\router (in the main office or any other remote sites).

 

This issue is only this laptop as other laptops seem to work fine without any issues.

 

The drivers for the NIC which is a "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller" are all up to date and I have tried using several versions of the driver which don't seem to resolve the issue.

 

My initial thought was an issue with the Cisco switch and router that was sat in-between the laptop and our head office and our remote office which one of our Cisco network guys has taken a look at and cant find any issues. Other things that have come to mind are either hardware issues or group policy which Im currently investigating.

 

Any other suggestion or ideas would be Welcomed!

So its picking up an IP correctly in whichever office you plug it into, and it can see the local network but can't see out into the others? If this is the only machine doing it I would check to see if a static Default Gateway address has been entered. It could be using this as opposed to one delivered by DHCP

Thanks for the quick response, the gateway address obtained by DHCP is correct and their is no alternative configuration specified for the wired interface.

Is the Windows Firewall turned off? Have you tried updating the notebook BIOS?

Are you trying to ping by name or IP address? Was wondering if it could be a DNS setting. I assume you have tried just to ping the IP of remote machines? Try doing a tracert from the command line to a remote IP address and see where the ping fails

Windows firewall is switched off and our 3rd part firewall is off. Bios has been flashed to the latest version and DNS seems to be resolving fine for local hosts.

Can you do a tracert to a remote host and see how far its getting?

If i perform a tracert from the laptop to one of the hosts at one of our remote offices (Over a maximum of 30 hops) i get the request has timed out.

Ahh now that you mention it, although the third party firewall is off try uninstalling it completely and restarting. I've seen some weird problems with third party firewalls literally blocking everything.

How many hops succeeded? Or did it not get anywhere? It should at the very least got a reply from the Default Gateway...

OK so you're not getting a response on the first line so it isn't getting to your default gateway. Make sure that its not a firewall issue on the first router by doing the same tracert from another machine in the same network area. You should get at least something back. If another machine works then there is def something about the settings on this laptop which is wrong.

 

Could you post a screenshot of the output from an ipconfig/all ?

Hi Guys,

 

I rebuilt the laptop yesterday afternoon to try and remove any possibilities of the firewall being an issue. At the moment this is a clean built with purely drivers installed and local access to the LAN (Windows Firewall Disabled).

And this is the only machine having these issues? This is WEIRD! Can you ping 10.0.240.240 ?

I cant ping the gateway(10.0.240.240) as ICMP\PING requests to the gateway are blocked. I have tested this on 3 laptops toshiba failed but both vaio and dell worked fine!

The ones that work can communicate with the PC's in the other network locations?

Yeah, on my vaio I can ping\communicate with hosts at all sites\locations without issues on the same subnet!

 

Im kind of happy now that its not just me that was banging my head against a wall!

Bit of a long shot but can you also post the ipconfig of one of the working laptops?

Struggling at the minute as I will need to make a site visit, I have found an identical Toshiba laptop which i believe works! therefore im going to take images from both and clone the working device and see if this works!
