Equalogic SAN & VMWare

Hi All,

 

Im pretty sure what I am doing here is right but ive never done this before so I would like to make sure its right in my head before I go and "Push the button"

 

We have a Dell Equalogic iSCSI SAN here with 1 ESXi host (version 4) I have just in another ESXi Host v5, after migrating the vSphere server's OS to 64bit and updating that to V5 etc, I am now ready to attach the SAN to the new server, all IP's configured etc. My question, When I add the software iSCSI and point it at the SAN, theres not going to be any problems (im thinking like deleting of existing VM's on the 1st ESXi) lol

 

Forgive my very stupid question but never worked with a Dell SAN (which I find overly complicates things - I know its good with what it does etc but so many features!) Ive only ever used FC SANs.

nope shouldn't be any problems with that. Have you installed the equalogic Host intergration tools and MPIO on the esxi server?

Not yet - I was going to wait until I had attached the software ISCSI and then do that install...Do I need the MPIO?... :/ Sorry! lol

the MPIO allows faster speeds to the san but not limiting a connection to a single path, I'm not sure what equallogic you have but it will have 2 ethernets into the back, the MPIO will provide load balancing across them.

 

by attach Iscsi software how do you mean? setup the device as a target?

 

If you get the Host intergration tools setup it will plugin directly to vcenter and do the rest for you.

 

 

EDIT: you still have to do the MPIO part yourself.

Can I setup the HIT tools without attaching the device as a target, or is it best to do that first? Thanks Glennda, your a big help!

Sorry I have been in a meeting. Yes you can setup the HIT it will then allow easy configuration of the target.
