Proxy settings checkbox suddenly greyed out on networked machines

We've just had server 2008 r2 installed on a new server and suddenly the computers are losing the proxy settings. The 'settings' are there but the box is greyed out in the connection settings in internet options... this of course is driving staff crazy and i need a solution asap if poss!! Any idea why it is doing this?? We use GPO's.

Hello. You can use GPMC and use Group Policy Results to check which policies are applied to a computer.

I have attached a screenshot that shows where abouts in a policy the settings are.

Is your GPO populated with your proxy server credentials?

 

GPO:

User configurations > policies > windows settings > Internet Explorer Maintenence > connection / Proxy settings?

 

Pop your proxy details in there and allocate to all staff users.

 

Sometimes if they dont apply correctly, try and make a new policy

Yeah it's all populated correctly- it's happened since the new server was installed and the policies migrated. Sounds like a new policy would be the way to go- cheers. I'll give it a try and post my results!

Have you got "wait for network" enabled in the GPO's if not? as it will boot and let you login without being connected to the network.

It's doing it on all of our machines I've made a new policy now- going to see if it makes a difference. Even gpupdate didn't sort it originally so i suspect the policy may have something to do with it. Corrupted on migration?

Possibly - although if it did that you wouldn't be able to view in in Group Policy management console (it says its unable to read the policy).

 

if you do gpresult /r does it say the policy is applying?

 

is the policy enforced?

We have actually had this issue where the original GPO didnt apply propperly, second one identical worked OK. No real reason, its happened to drive mappings too. Just delete old and create new.

The details are populated but the box to turn proxy settings on and off is set to 'off'...VERY weird!

go into the registry and look for this key

 

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings look for a reg dword called ProxyEnable and see what the value is set to.

Ok I've just had a look at a machine, whacked in gpresult and the new policy is showing up. GPO applied successfully!!

It would have just got itself in a tis, all those Proxy GPO's do is tweak registry keys - like the one I mentioned.

I'm glad creating a new GPO fixed it for you.

 

Remember for the future, some GPO's just don't work for whatever reason so deleting & recreating usually fixes things and is much less hassle. Another useful tip i find is to hit refresh a couple of times in Group Policy Management once you make changes to the GPO or change security permissions. This way the GPO should be applied straight away without the need for a gpupdate /force on machine or wait for replication

 

I have only just started to use AD / Group Policy myself but the above has happened 3 times to us, once with our printer server driver install GPO, a second with our staff drive mappings and a third time with proxy settings. The GPO i screenshot for you actually says our homepage shoud be google but its still our website, why im not sure because we dont have it specified anywhere. I'll probably just create a new GPO with that one setting in it instead
