Best practice for setting up programs for 32-bit and 64-bit use

I am just starting to load and setup programs users. I have two profiles, staff and student and both have access to most of the same programs. The problem I have, which I'm sure is not unique, is that I have a mixture of 32-bit and 64-bit computers.

 

Currently I enable/disable visible programs shortcuts depending on whether the user is a student or staff member, but the problem is that Windows 7 64-bit stores the programs in a different place to Windows XP. Do I have to have seperate shortcuts for 32-bit and 64-bit versions but only one set will work or is there a better way?
