Networking Win 7 Pro machines on an Xp Network

I'm beginning to think this can't be done. I can set up our new machines on the network and users log in Ok but are presented with an empty desktop (except for the recycle bin!!!) and the start/programme bars are empty.

 

Someone told me that we can't mix the new OS with the old - seems daft as theyre both MS systems (Oh... that might explain it!) and he says he's developing a new front end system which will cope with this.

 

Anyone else run into this and is there a way round it? Otherwise we have expensive laptops for surfing the web!

Sounds like you've deployed xp policies to a win7 machine, which won't work.

 

A lot of items are moved around e.g. Documents and settings don't exist etc etc, so an xp policy redirecting to that will do nothing on win7.

 

But if you setup some new policies for the win7 machines they'll work

Have a read up on WMI filters for group policy settings. It will allow you to seperate Windows 7 & Windows 8 policy settings. Edited November 27, 2012 by FN-GM
