Advice on projectors to go with Macbook

I have a friend who is a well know micro-engraver

 

He came into school yesterday to talk to some of our "arty" kids and he was very impressed with the projected images and the visualiser. He is starting to do roadshows and would like to get a projector to go with his Macbook. I know nothing about Apple products and would like some advice on what to recommend. It will need to be at the budget end but be able to show the fine detail. He'll also have to lug it around with all of his other stuff, so portability would be good. Any advice would be appreciated.

What type of Macbook exactly?

 

A normal projector you would use on a PC will work. But there is a microdispaly port on the newer Macbook range so you will need to find the right adapter.

Sorry, I don't know. He had his pinched and is in the process of replacing it. I think he will probably go second-hand, so I doubt it will be a newer one. Do they normally come with a vga adapter or is that an extra he will need?

They dont come with one you need to buy one. Seems to be typical with anything you buy these days!

If he's using a 13" MacBook I strongly recommend a projector that matches the native resolution of the machine, which I think would mean WXGA. This avoids any screen resizing and so on and is much nicer to use. Many new projectors have HDMI ports, and you can buy cables with mini display port/lightning at one end, HDMI the other so it is a one-cable setup for video and sound with no adaptors.
