I think it has its draw backs and its advantages. I think it may allow each department to focus on its own area better, but it means that inter-department communications are more complex and cross department policies will take longer.

 

If it comes with a nice big budget boost for schools then it will be good, else I fear it is just another case of smoke and mirrors.

The DfES has now been split into 2 departments ... linked but seperate (sort of...)

 

The Department for Children, Schools & Families Schools has the remit for :

14-19 changes

Children's health

Child protection

Youth and family policy

Respect agenda

Anti-drugs work

 

The Department for Innovations, Universities and Skills has the remit for :

Universities - teaching and research

Science

Innovation

Skills sector

 

The DCSF will be run by Ed Balls and the DIUS will be run by John Denham.

 

I am concerned that this separation may cause problems for Specialist Schools, especially those that have a history of innovation , research and thinking differently. It may be that schools have yet another master to try and appease (after OFSTED, QCA, SSAT, Local Authorities, the unions and now DCSF and DIUS instead of just the DfES.)

 

I suppose we will just have to wait a few weeks to see how the politics of it all pans out, see what information is released and then see what funding changes are going to happen.

 

I am also interested to see what happens to the Learning & Skills Council as it could sit in either camp and has a significant role in the development of a number of new course styles (level 2 courses at KS5, diplomas, etc)

I suppose the new departments make sense of BSF - all schools run the same by faceless companies, with little room for innovation.

Ed Balls wife is Yvette Cooper, who is the new housing minister, a little off topic, but does anyone know if thats a first? A husband and wife both being in the same cabinet? Been trying to think and I cant think of it happening before in my time
