Guys

Can anybody advise how to set a default Sound output and input via MCX on Lion 10.7.5.

The place has just added new usb external sound devices and would like this device setup as default -

Any ideas?

Thanks

At best you'd have to hope changes to the system sound device setting are kept in a plist somewhere that you can distribute to the machines.

I have a suspicion it might not be possible, though - I'm sure someone told me sound settings are kept in PRAM, certain things like system volume etc., at least.

Do the systems not hold the settings for network users if you've logged in and changed it as an admin?

I've done some Googling. I don't expect this is going to have an MCX-type solution, so I started looking at what can be scripted.

Looks like there are Applescript methods, and also Bash (Terminal) methods.

You may need additional apps installed on the machines to help out, and you'd have to set up some kind of login action to run these. That said, I know Lion isn't friendly with login scripts, so maybe an Applescript app of one of the above solutions that runs as a hidden Login Item would do the trick?

I've never done this kind of automation so am not sure if 'System Preferences' actually pops up on screen or not, though, which may spoil the effect. I'd be aiming for the Terminal method, I reckon.

HTH.
