synaesthesia Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 This is beyond words. BBC News - L'Aquila quake: Italy scientists guilty of manslaughter Stupid. Moronic. Without a clue. Braindead. Etc. In other world news: Italy convicts God for causing it in the first place Michael Fish convicted for downplaying a hurricane in 1987.
Geoff Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 All this does is encourage scientists to not monitor/report on seismic events for fear of being prosecuted. Oddly enough this leads to even more dead people than even bad warnings.
synaesthesia Posted October 22, 2012 Author Posted October 22, 2012 There's clearly more to it than we're getting news of - likely mafia and/or money related, no doubt. I can't for one moment imagine anyone is *that* stupid. And we have politicians like Boris Johnson! (doffs cap - stupid he may be, but he's our stupid!)
LiamH Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 Where there's blame, there's a claim! Utterly stupid, and will just make future earthquakes even worse because scientists will feel the need to say "oh yeah, defiantly the end of the world" leading to panic.
localzuk Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 As judgements to go, if it is a case of 'these scientists said everything was fine, it wasn't and that's their fault' then that simply can't stand. It means that science is being seen as a 'if a scientist says it, it must be true' system, which it isn't. Why would any scientist advise the Italian government from now on then? If I were in any position in that country to do with public safety and science, I'd be out the country and into a sane place quicker than you could read this paragraph. I doubt it'll stick though, no sane judicial system would allow such a conviction to stick, would it?
LiamH Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 just had a thought... 1)move to Italy 2)seek the services of a palm reader / psychic / ect 3)press charges when they get it wrong

sonofsanta Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 the prosecution argued that the scientists were "just too reassuring" In that case I'm suing my mother for saying it wouldn't hurt when I had that first filling, and then it did, and I cried. Stupid mummy! I mean, it just beggars belief. It is the worst of dark ages superstition and blame. Even if it's overturned on appeal it's already set the precedent in people's minds. In addition to their sentences, all have been barred from ever holding public office again, La Repubblica reports. You know what? I don't think they'd want to risk it again anyway.
