wickit Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Current setup 2 physical server both hosing 2 vm each vm has 2 vhd's storage space on both of the physical server is now at a point where vms are pausing and I am having to move files and vhd's around I was going to place and order for a single iSCSI device with 10TB worth of storage and wondered if this is the way to go advice please cheers
glennda Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 It depends on what you want to be able to achvieve is it purely for clustering? Large Sans at 10TB are expensive although solutions like Open-E for custom built Sans are very good and bring that cost down a lot.
pantscat Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 As @glennda said, a 10TB SAN is potentially expensive. 10TB is lot of space for just four VMs - what exactly do you want to achieve?
glennda Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 You would get very good perfomance out of this running Open-E. V7 is a simple upgrade SR2612UR-24 I'm currently at the training for Open E Certified Engineer training so if you like the look of it and have any questions post them! Plus 10TB for a photographic/CAD business isn't a huge amount IMHO! especially with Raid and Replication space.
pantscat Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Plus 10TB for a photographic/CAD business isn't a huge amount IMHO! especially with Raid and Replication space. I must've missed that!
glennda Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I must've missed that! it doesn't say that but i'm going on experience of working with that kind of client. I have 1 client with 3 users who have nearly 3TB's of data as they keep everything live.
pantscat Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Indeed! - Wife works in magazines and their design team keeps an amazing amount of data...
wickit Posted October 15, 2012 Author Posted October 15, 2012 Thanks for the replies I will expand on my first question looking at a Synology DS1512+ with 5x 2TB drives coming in at £1000 so very cheap need to know if this can be used to share between the 2 host machines Cheers
pantscat Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 You *could* use this... but I can't imagine that the performance will be particularly amazing. It's only using 5 SATA disks so the IOPS will be pretty low. I'd try and look for something with more disks and if possible SAS disks - have a look at the Thecus range - that's on the more affordable side for "proper" storage.
glennda Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 IMHO you won't get decent performance from Sata disks! The raid controller on it doesn't look great either. When it comes to front end storage there is no point skimping at all.
