Following 2 more promotions, we have 2 vacancies for IT Support staff.

Details here: https://www4.ad.ic.ac.uk/OA_HTML/OA.jsp?akRegionCode=IRC_VIS_VAC_DISPLAY_PAGE&akRegionApplicationId=800&transactionid=401511993&retainAM=Y&p_svid=38750&p_spid=1602173&oapc=9&oas=UioRgzD_Pnkkg-zWePn8ZQ..

There's a chance that that stupidly long URL won't work - if so, go to Employment and follow "Job search for applicants not currently employed by Imperial College staff" and then look at Professional Area "Information Communication Technology"

The jobs are in the faculty support teams - providing second line desktop support to staff and students in one part of the College (eg my team provides support to all Maths and Physics users)

The job involves working with end users - if you're the sort of geek who doesn't like dealing with end users then it's not for you. On the other hand, if you want the challenge of supporting world leading science (Imperial consistently ranks in the top 10 worldwide) then this is the job for you.

You should be very familiar with working with Windows and either Linux or Mac OS (the bulk of teaching machines run Windows; other machines run just about every OS that exists!)

Note that there are 2 salary scales; you would normally expect to start on a 3a (£28,200 up) but most people progress to 3b once they've demonstrated that they are doing the job at a satisfactory level.

If you want to ask about this feel free to email me - [email protected]

Apologies for the confusion in the advert - it states that the posts are internal only. As far as I can tell, this is not the case - they are open to anyone.

I'm trying to get the website updated but this requires HR to do stuff which isn't always easy (and it also needs a very clunky Oracle system to behave and that's even harder!)

OK; the advert has now been updated to show clearly that the jobs are open to anyone and the closing date extended to 23 October so there's more time to apply. Interviews should be w/c 5 November.

We do need good, new people at Imperial - it's an amazing place to work in a brilliant part of London and the salary's not too bad!

From what I could find out, some of these job vacancies have drawn over 100 applications, if you also take into account internal applications, they can afford to be selective, my application was pruned after 1 day which leads me to believe that I got bumped by HR, so even having a degree made no difference, pity as the job sounded good.

I really wanted to apply for this, unfortunately the hours in addition to travel times from East London would have resulted in practically zero family time, which would have been impractical with young children.

I don't think the hours are that bad. My interpretation is that people have to be there from 8:30 til 6:30, not that you'd be expected to work that entire shift. That's like a 9 til 7, nobody should expect that.
