DPM 2010 and creating protection groups

I have just been given the wonderful task of getting DPM to work - I am the 4th person to attempt this and I have never used DPM before but am familiar with Symantic etc.

We have quite a few servers (though not all) backing up to disk - although they had problems getting those to work initially. And one server is or has been backing up to tape.

 

I have poked about a bit and I am trying to create a new protection group to "play with". Whenever I have tried to create a new group I get the message below.

 

 

Create protection group: Protection Group 1 failed:

Error 419: DPM could not set security permissions on the replica or recovery point volume that was created.

Error details: The system cannot find the path specified

Recommended action: Review the error details, take appropriate action and retry the operation.

Allocate Replica For F:\ failed:

I have DPM 2010 installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2.

I am trying to backup any of the following:

Physical Windows Server 2003

Physical Windows Server 2008 R2

Virtual Windows Server 2008 R2

Some of these servers (virtual servers) have never been backed up before, so I have installed the DPM Agent.

Some are currently being backed up (but have had problems initially) and are currently being backed up to disk.

Some have always worked and are currently being backed up to disk.

 

So why can I not create a new protection group?

 

I have also tried system state backups, BMR backups, backing up an entire volume or backing up a tiny little directory.

 

I do NOT want to modify an existing protection group, until I know why I cannot create a new one as my name would be MUD if I mucked up an existing working backup to disk.

 

Please help me.

Did you resolve this issue? Im having the same problem with my 2012 box

Well I resolved this issue - cannot remember how though.

 

Think the database got its knickers in a twist, so had to resync. Since then I have also rebuilt the server as 2012 & installed DPM 2012. Installed a QNAP box as we were constantly running out of hard disk space.

 

To resync

On the DPM Server

Run DPM Management shell

At the prompt type "DpmSync -Sync" without speach marks. This is assuming that there is only the one DPM Server and only the one database.

That takes a few minutes to run.

Afterwards try creating the new protection group

 

Good Luck, if that doesn't work I will have another think

OK so I my error fixed. Turned out to be Microsoft Endpoint Protection on the DPM server. Once in installed, I was able to modify and add protection groups
