Strange Laptop Issue

Don't know if this is Windows 7 or Server 2008R2 issue so if someone tells me this is a server issue I'll move it!

 

One of the teachers is complaining that she cannot access her documents when she is at home. We use offline files,logging on at home as if you were at school etc and everything is set up as usual - can't see any issues, but no synchronisation and no docs at home.

She also tells me that when she is at home, her laptop shuts down at 9pm - which is set at school by Shutdownertron. I don't really understand why this is happening - no one else has this issue.

Can anyone tell me where I should be looking or what I can do?

Is it possible that her laptop has ended up in the wrong OU?

 

Can you see the offline files working down in the system tray?

Hmmm... strange.... We've had this on a couple of ultrabooks.

 

Normal gpupdate didn't help.

 

I had to run "gpupdate /force /sync" twice on the suspect ultrabooks before they sprang to life.

It seems to me that syncronisation is not working, could be that she has such a large profile that it may not be finishing or that the laptop is not connecting properly to the domain when she is in school, this would give her a local profile on the laptop and she wouldn't know any difference as she would still have a mydocuments folder.

 

Log in to the laptop at school as her and see if the syncronisation is working properly, even force sync if you have to.

 

Take it off the domain then and log in as her again to see if the offline files are working.

mmmm - there definitely is no syncing going on and she is definitely properly on the domain when she is at school which is why I am confused...

Will try and force it tomorrow

As I mentioned sometimes it may be too much data to sync and is falling over or it is not connected long enough to sync all her data, check out the size of her data profile.

 

Had another school that enabled sycronisation across its staff laptops and then wondered why the network ground to a halt first thing on a Monday morning and when they diagnosed the problem it became apparent that they had synced the users work area and not setup the only sync the file changes so every laptop on a Monday morning was trying to sync on average 30Gb of data for every staff member hehe!

The syncing is fine on every other machine - but it appears to not even start on hers. I am hoping that taking it off the domain and putting it back might help as I do agree that it may not be 'properly' on the domain.

I thought she was in the correct OU because I had to sort them all out and move teachers about at the beginning of term as they changed year groups, and she had reported no problems in the first week of term - I did ask and it was syncing like a good 'un

Got to school today to find that not only was the computer not in the correct OU, but actually it wasn't in any OU at all, it had vanished! And yet it was on the domain - I could browse to stuff on the server etc.

I eventually found it using search, but annoyingly it doesnt tell you where it was hiding.

Can anyone shed light on why that might happen and where it went?

In your active directory console, go to the View menu and click Advanced Features (it will have a tick next to it on the menu if it's on)

Then search for the laptop again, as normal.

Double click on the result to look at the properties as normal, and you should have some extra tabs available now - one of which is Object. On that tab is the Canonical Name of Object - which will tell you which OU it's in at the moment.

 

God knows why it happened, but that's how to find it again so you can move it back
