oxide54 Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Hi I need some kind of VPN solution for home. even something like teamviewer would work, but something that only connects directly to my house and doesn't go through their own servers. suggestions please. basically as i have a lab setup at home it would be nice to be able to remote desktop onto my vm's at home from work so i can spend work time researching rather than home time.!

SYNACK Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 vm's aren't running windows 7, they running server r2 08 oh and did i forget port 80 and 443 only You just need one machine on the local network to be running it to act as the gateway, anyway having 2008 there makes it easier, that does VPNs to. You should be able to bang out an SSL VPN which uses 443 without too much hassel. The biggest issue is generating a self signed cert to use or spending the $20 on a brought one.
MatthewL Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 LogMeIn on one machine then RDP from there?
SYNACK Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 (edited) Come to think of it I think 2008 came with remote desktop gateway, as long as you get a cert or have it generate a self signed one that you can install on the vpn client it will tunnel all RDP traffic via 443. Works really well. I think that this way even has a button to click to generate a self signed cert easily. Edited September 11, 2012 by SYNACK
oxide54 Posted September 11, 2012 Author Posted September 11, 2012 i'm not bothered about generating a certificate thats the least of my worries really, i found rd gateway would stop working randomlly, might set it up back up again and give it another go, i did like it when it worked.

SYNACK Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 doesn't that go via their servers Yes it does as does their Hamachi vpn service.
oxide54 Posted September 11, 2012 Author Posted September 11, 2012 i'm pretty sure things like that are blocked on wsgfl
MicrosoftTechy Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 try this mate, ill help you set it up it can be a pain but its really good its like the Cisco one SSL-Explorer | Free Security & Utilities software downloads at SourceForge.net

If the connection was choking out this may effect whatever solution you go with, your not using dydns or something with a dynamic ip. That could cause and explain a stack of hassels.
oxide54 Posted September 11, 2012 Author Posted September 11, 2012 actually i think your right, its probably the stupid 02 adsl router i have, i remember it kept re-enabling dhcp all buy itself.
