Mac duplicate file finder

Following on from my earlier thread here: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/how-do-you-do/100381-duplicate-file-detection-software.html it now turns out my brother has a large external drive formatted for Mac. What I now need is a recommendation for a free package for OSX that would detect, list and give the option to delete duplicate files as required. Can't you use spotlight with the advanced filter search options ( clicking plus symbol to search by document kind / type etc ) then use the CMD / Apple button to select any duplicates manually and once they are highlighted you can either right click on one of the dupes and move to trash or hold CMD / apple and press the back space key ?

I know that the task be done with some third party tools like Gemini of Mac paw and Speed up mac of Stellar but haven't ever tried spotlight. I'll definitely give it a trial.

 

But, one question in advance- Is it possible to find duplicate media files if they have different names ?

 

Gemini and Decloner compare files based on their content, so different file names don't matter. This is also why using just Spotlight for finding duplicates is very inaccurate. You may find similarly named files, but there won't be any guarantee that they are really identical; and you will also miss duplicate files that are named differently.
