[Boot Camp] Windows 8 - The installer disc could not be found

I'm running Mountain Lion (10.8.1) on a mid-2010 MacBook Pro and I'm trying to install Windows 8 using Boot Camp. I downloaded the Windows 8 RTM from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Portal. I used Boot Camp for the first time and it gave the option to "Create a Windows 7 USB Disk" which I did using the Windows 8 ISO. I couldn't install Boot Camp at the time, so I decided I'd do it later. I've just re-run the Boot Camp Assistant and I've noticed the "Create a Windows 7 USB Disk" isn't there anymore, and also, when it comes to creating the partition, I get the following error:

 

The installer disc could not be found.

Insert your Windows installer disc and wait a few seconds for the disc to be recognized.

 

2 questions:

 

1) How do I get the option to create a Windows USB Disk again?

2) How can I get the Boot Camp Assistant to recognise the USB I already have?

Have you looked at using this, I think it may allow you to install 8 directly without all that Apple stuff getting in the way

Also will rEFIt void warranty etc , assuming you have apple care or something possibly ? Not been keen on mucking about with EFI on apple macs myself tbh.

Yeah, the VM is an option, but I was hoping to install it using Boot Camp and then using Fusion to create the VM from the Boot Camp partition. Therefore saving me the need to have to reconfigure Windows 8 twice.

 

I agree with the messing with EFI part. Don't really like the look of that. Might just wait for official support from Apple.

 

Any ideas on how to get the option back to create a USB install disk?

@GrumbleDook has used it I think so he could tell you more about rEFIt. Other than that you'll have to wait for Apple which means some time after the consumer release for support.

I did give rEFIt a go but a number of things broke in a bad way ... and I couldn't find a quick fix so did a wipe / restore from backup. The user forums where it gets talked about (Insanelymac and Onmac) have got some good advice about options but seem more hackintosh orientated nowadays (been a while since I was last on there)

 

I've not had a chance to stick W8 on yet, but of what little I have had a chance to read has shown that even the RTM is prone to hanging in BC, there are problems with some drivers (inc BT) and the official support is likely to be out mid-November (though there are pushes to get it out sooner on the developer track).

 

I'm operating it out of Parallels 7 at the moment and looking forward to Parallels 8 to try to get some of the speed back!
