Show NETBIOS name on 'My Computer'

Hi All,

 

Just doing the final tweaks to our Windows 7 deployment.

 

In XP, by adding a new registry entry you could get the NETBIOS name of the computer to appear at the end of 'My Computer'. This was useful from a support point of view as it was easy for the user to tell you the name of the PC without having to crawl around looking for labels.

 

The same registry key doesn't work in Windows 7. Does anyone know if it is possible to do this in Windows 7?

It's not like it's a major issue but just makes things nice and easy!

It does work but you will need to change permissions on the reg key first. This isnt recommended by Microsoft by the way. We use desktop info - Glenn's Eclectic Freeware

Thanks - just looking and you can't change the permissions either, not without taking ownership anyhow. Think I'll leave it as it is.

TBH you should be able to make a little auto-it script the user can run which will pop up the hostname. should be fairly easy to make.

Yes, just like the ability to see it quickly, at a glance. I've looked at desktop info though that FN-GM recommended and it will do just that, and more besides.

It is deff possible to do what you want within 7 for renaming My computer as I've got lots of clients that do it Via ScriptLogic.

What about BGInfo on the desktop?
