Vista, internet issues.

Had the head dump her parents laptop on my desk saying the internets not working but they can send/receive email.

 

So i have a quick look and internet works fine in safe mode with IE, boot into normal mode and i get the Page cannot be displayed, if i open up a command prompt and type ping http://www.yahoo.com it can resolve http://www.yahoo.com to the correct IP.

 

I have tried sfc /scannow , a System restore from a few weeks ago, removing all the things set to run at startup in msconfig and still no luck. Any suggestions before i re-install?

 

It does have firefox but that will not load, does have norton 360 but does not seem to load and clicking uninstall from programs and features does nothing. I did want to try telnet Yahoo! Deutschland 80 to make sure norton was not somehow blocking traffic on port 80, but Microsoft removed it as default in the wonderful wisdom and turn windows features on and off does not seem to work either , grrrr. Only got my Mac to hand at the moment so cannot really copy telnet off there, and i have no pen drives handy at the moment anyway.

Try uninstalling update KB2699988, as per the the above link that I started, the symptoms sound the same and it sorted the problem.

Give this a try: Repair Internet Explorer with Fix IE Utility

 

I had similar symptoms with a friends computer and this fixed it. I would also dump Norton 360 (if the uninstaller doesn't work, then you can download one of their removal utilities) and install Microsoft Security Essentials.
