Deploying printers by computer with GPP

We have a single suite in our school which needs to get a printer assigned to it - it is not done by user for this suite (the rest of the school uses follow-me printing).

 

How do I go about doing this in GPP?

 

If I put it in the user section, as a shared printer, nothing happens (as it is obviously only paying attention to the computer settings part of the policy), but if I put it in the computer section, there is no 'shared printer' option, only TCP/IP or local.

 

Thoughts? Or should I just update my login script and add a machine group check?

Add a GPO with security filtering (the pane at the bottom) for all users and for that OU or security group those computers are in (we do security groups). And link that GPO to the OU containing those PCs.

And yes, put the printers in the "user" section.

Another way to do it:

1. Create a GPO with the required printer GPP settings in the user section
   
2. Then enable "User Group Policy loopback processing mode" and set to merge in the computer section of the GPO
   
3. Finally link the GPO to the OU with the computers you want the printer mapped to

I would suggest using GPP Item Level Targeting. You will find it on the options tab I think when setting up the shared printer in GPP in the user config. You can use one GPO to control all printers for staff, students based on room location. Just add the OU you require to item level targeting. Takes a bit of playing around with but reduced the amount of GPO you might have.
