I have never used Sharepoint before so im not familiar with it at all. My boss wants some that we can host documents on, such as training manuals that can be easily accessed and sorted into a hierarchy.

So for instance i want a training section with documents that contain hyperlinks to other pages which sit below it on the hierarchy, then a complete other section devoted to marketing for example. We have looked at something called Confluence which seems to do what we want but i'm interested to know if Sharepoint would also achieve this for us?

It would but it is an awefully big hamer for such a little task. It would be easy enough creating document collections and you could even map right to them as drives. Sharepoint is huge though and can do so many things that it can be somewhat overkill for smaller tasks, kind of like taking the space shuttle to get milk.

Can't recommend Confluence. We've had some shocking trouble getting the support we want fort it, even though we use the paid for version.
