Ruckus + Auto Proxy config?

First let me preface this by saying I might be being stupid here or misunderstanding this:

 

I have been setting up a Ruckus network in school and saw the option for auto configuring proxy settings.

So, I followed the Ruckus guide to setting up WPAD and now have that working via both DHCP and DNS. I tested this and machines are getting correct proxy settings via WPAD so went to move on to setting up proxy auto config in the Ruckus ZD.

 

This is where I am now confused. The Ruckus guide says to enable auto proxy detection in the client browsers and add the IP of the WPAD server to a wlan in ZD.

That's all well and good, but as far as I can see, if you tell browsers to auto config proxy settings their are going to use the normal method of getting the proxy by DHCP or DNS. So what is the ZD auto config option actually doing?

 

I could understand if the ZD was acting as a proxy for the client and using the IP of the WPAD server to get the WPAD.dat but that does not appear to the case as the instructions tell you to configure the clients browsers and not setting any proxy settings disables internet access.

 

Anyone able to shed some light on this?

Im just playing around with it now. Im also a little confused. Did you get anywhere with this?

Well, I followed the Ruckus guide and it all works.

However I still can't for the life of me see what enabling the option in the ZD does.

What are you stuck on, perhaps I can help after getting it to work myself?

I'm actually on hols and away at moment but will be back in the office on Monday.

I think the ZD can act as a host for the WPAD file as well.

I've wondered this recently as well, we have a smoothy with multi interfaces, WPAD files per VLAN network so I was interested in what it actually does.

 

Did you get to the bottom of it ?

No. I still can't work out what that setting does.

Agreed, it can. Though the point is if you don't use ZD to host the wpad file then what does providing the IP of the wpad server do?
