DL180/185 replacement

Hi

 

got a dl 185g5 that died after bios update. yes should have read the small print, buried in the text file but its done now. no way to ressurect. tbh it was nearing end of life so not bothered tbh.

 

was looking at Dl180g6 12 drive as replacement with 12 X 3TB drives and p410 array controller.

 

i'm being told DL180g6 is end of line.

 

so any ideas for replacement?

 

this is my DPM box btw.

 

will consider other manufactuers but only something sensible like IBM not freds homebrew server

How about a DL165 G7 with a MSA attached?

 

You would have a external SAS card that would go into the back of the MSA and give you the extra hard drive bays.

hmm debating homebrew, but i don't tend to be around in this job much longer so would rather leave them with something as "standard" as possible,

Would you be keeping all your live data/backups in the same physical location in that case? I know some are of the mind that backup data should be as far away from live as possible but we take the stance that our backup server is a separate block and the likelihood of both burning down is low.

i take the stance that if the DPM server blows up the san blows up and the server room blows up. i go and get the tape dpm made me the previous day from the fire proof safe in a different building and rebuild from that,

Oooh yes that is me - the SSD is so that the OS dosn't get taken down while the HDDs look after the backup data.

yeh it was err fitting that ssd that caused this server to die!

 

onboard sata kept losing the SSD every other boot, so what do you . hmm bios update. ahh should have read the fine print, you can't just use the latest, you have to do each one in series, it seems hp made changed to the boot block etc.

 

oh well, was going to replace it soon anyway, i'm just looking at your suggestion on the other thread of xcases looks quite interesting, just trying to spec up everything I need.

 

any idea what else you need to go with something like this? i.e. how disk / raid controller / etc.

Ouch - I wouldn't put a consumer SSD in a proper HP server as the RAID cards don't always like non HP kit.

 

For things of that size I would wait for another guy on here to chirp in or talk to the X-Case guys direct

that server (the one that died) has an onboard broadcom sata controller as well as the p400 raid.
