Garageband alternatives for PC

Anyone got any suggestions for a PC based alternative? I was having a play with Sony Acid Music 8 last night which seemed very good (but i'm no music teacher) if anyone has any suggestions for alternatives i'd love to hear them.

Steinberg Sequel is the closest thing to a like-for-like on PC... as Cubase is to Logic, so Sequel is to Garageband.

Are you looking for something to use personally? Or something to put on the school network? Sequel was alrite until put into a network scenario and then we had all sorts of problems of it not wanting to save in the correct place. Corrupting students work and just generally not working.
