What to do?

Hi all,

 

I have set up a new server and a new domain as i am starting from scratch.

 

My question is what do i do with my exchange server and things like that?

 

Is it ok just to change the domain and join the new server or will this cause problems?

No dont change the domain with Exchange you will ruin it.

 

Is there any reason your starting again and not upgrading?

Yes as FN-GM says Don't do that with Exchange - Sims/File Servers you can just about get away with it.

A bit off topic, but what makes you say you can just about get away with it for Sims?

I'm about to do this, and from all my testing I've done joining Sims server to a different domain effects nothings and works nicely ( Apart for Sims shared permision - Which is easy enough to set back ) You worry me saying this^^ Make's me think my testing might of lied to me !

SIMS shouldn't mind, so long as you aren't relying on integrated logins. You'll need to edit sims.ini files and connect.ini files on clients though. It shouldn't mind as it uses mixed mode for auth rather than domain integrated auth only. So, if something happens, you can always still log in with the sa account etc...

That - and you need to go through and reset share permissions etc as the user/groups UUID's will have changed. But personally I would only do it as a temporary measure until I could rebuild a machine which has been only on one domain but thats just me being pedantic about the whole changing domains thing

 

You also need to make sure you have SQL logins setup as well as Windows Auth on the SQL instance. It does work I have done it before.

The reason I am starting again is because the way it is set up at the moment is just crazy lots of problems and things like that.

 

I am currently using exchange 2003

With Exchange 2003 you can extract mailbox's using Exmerge from Microsoft to export mailbox's to PST. You can then use Powershell scripting to bulk import pst's into exchange 2010 like this.

would it be easier to rebuild my new server join it to the exsiting domain then transfer all roles to the new server so that then becomes the new domain controller?

 

Then i suppose i could just delete all the group policys and sort it out to the way that i want it.

 

If this would be the best way does anyone have a how to or anything just so i dont mess anything up.

 

The other thing is are dns and dhcp currently run on a seperate server and i want the domain controller, dns and dhcp on the same server so can you please give me instructions.

 

I have an idea on this but dont want to risk messing things up

If you're setting up a new domain then just simply install Exch and move mailboxes. If you mean you created a new forest then you will have to migrate to the new forest which is a little more complicated then just movng mailboxes and means deploying a new Exch Org.

 

I suggest you use the ExchDPA to help you.

What i decided to do is set up the new domain and use hyper v and do a virtual 2003 server and set up exchange on that. I spoke to the teachers and they said that they deleted all emails as they do this every summer. Thanks everyone for all your help
