Active Directory - Roles

Had a total mind block today because I have not touched it for such a long time how do I find out which DC's have roles to them i.e. the GC etc?

 

I have built 2 new DC's to go in our new data center and I have 2 to decommission, just want to check that the 2 that are going have nothing on them. I know one is a DNS server so will have to sort that but need to check nothing else will die!

Go into Ad Sites and services - select site and expand the DC you will get NTDS settings at which point right click and there is a tickbox.

They're dotted about in two or three places; this Technet article will be your friend. Should only take 2 or 3 minutes in an mmc.

 

Regarding global catalog: you can have more than one GC in your domain at a time (there are times when you can't, iirc, but a single domain on a school network will be fine) so just make sure at least one of your new DCs is a GC and you'll be fine.
