spend_day Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Wasn't entirely sure where to put this so please feel free to move Hey, We were asked today to look into having an enterprise wireless system setup in the school to (originally) give internet access to staff members mobiles laptops etc throughout the school. Although I can see that brief increase once we start writing a specification in earnest. Anyway I can see this leading to a massive increase in BYOD for teachers and maybe students, something that is currently discouraged. I know PAT testing is a suggestion rather than a rule but do you have any kind of reference to electrical usage/safety in the BYOD usage policy or is it just something that's kinda just left to itself? just something I was thinking about
spend_day Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 bring your own device latest I.T. Buzzphrase
FN-GM Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Personally i wouldnt bother. It will be really hard to manage. Plus it might prevent people from bring in devices. I wouldnt want an ugly sticker on my laptop charger.
CyberNerd Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Our LA advised that PAT in itself isn't a legal requirement and as such the teacher can do visual inspections.
twin--turbo Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Our LA advised that PAT in itself isn't a legal requirement and as such the teacher can do visual inspections. ROFL......... The number of times we have confiscated equipment from teachers would not lead me to trust them to do a visual check. Rob
glennda Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Our LA advised that PAT in itself isn't a legal requirement and as such the teacher can do visual inspections. Its no legal requirement but you have to ensure it is in good working order - therefore in your BYOD AUP you state that any person bringing an item into school does so and takes the full responsibility should there be a problem - therefore blame the users whos device it is rather than the building in which it happened. Many laptop chargers fail pat tests anyway so a visual inspection is the only option.

spend_day Posted July 7, 2012 Author Posted July 7, 2012 Yeah I guess just putting in a users responsibility should be enough but as people have said there are staff who would just ignore this and I'm not that worried about staff members own equipment. I would be concerned about what would happen should something like a student get an electric shock from a staff members personal device with exposed wires. am I just being overly cautious

However if you start telling staff to check appliances (including ones in there classroom) then your likely to upset the Unions. Catch 22. I stopped writhing a electrical safety policy as there was no support from the MGT for the stuff that needed to be in there. Rob
Andrew_C Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 you have to ensure it is in good working orderNo; only SAFE. For a laptop this is trivial. You only need to check the mains lead and power supply. This is the sort of thing that HSE would expect to be tested maybe once every four years. However if you start telling staff to check appliances (including ones in there classroom) then your likely to upset the Unions. Well the Unions need to just suck it up. It is a requirement that all users check kit that they are using.
