Hi guys, need a few ideas, Heres what I got:

I got an old broken CC3 Network (windows 2k3 server), and I'm moving to a new Vanilla Windows 2008 R2 server.

1. Moving staff is straightforward, usernames in new in old and new servers are the same.

2. The problem is a the students. I have 1000+ students who's usernames are a new format (not my idea, that's what the school wants).

my thought is I make one excel spreadsheet export users from old network to and new new network, with the following information

Old Network New Network

Username FirstName Lastname Home Directory Username Firstname Lastname Home Directory

Do a formula where firstname & Lastname Match and then move the old home directory to new home directory. To do this I need to a tool that can export from AD (Win2k3 and Win2k8), Username, First Name, Lastname (which is easy), but the IMPORTANT one is "Home directory". Any idea's?

Is the home directory not just username on a path?

We have done this move 3 times, once with 2 sets of user data (one from Windows and one from Novell) in the last 4 years.

No becuase on the old server, they are in subfolders called Year8,9,10 etc.. to cut a long story short they haven't been managed very well, so you some year 11s are in year 8, 9, 10 container etc and this is the same for all other year groups.. On the new server I have exported the users from the mis, into excel and from excel into AD so this is fine.

This is why I will match first name and last name to find the user and their corresponding home directories, but obviously need to export the info from AD in the first place.

old network ad structure as follows

AD name: myschool.internal

Servername: DC3

OU's.. Establishments

MySchool

Students

Year 8

Year 9

etc..

plus 1 or 2 sample user accounts in students

I am typing the following CSVDE command:

csvde -m -f students.csv -d "OU=Establishments,OU=Myschool,OU=Students,OU=Year 9,DC=myschool,DC=internal" -s DC3 -r "(objectCategory=person)" -l "samAccountName,firstname,lastname,homedirectory"

it says command completed succesfully, no entries found. Am I typing missing something obvious?

Twin turbo, the ds query seems really simple, but what are you outputing to, and how does it know which container to query?.. many thanks

dsquery -limit 10000 user OU=year06,OU=students,DC=school,DC=internal -name * | dsget user -samid -hmdir >> userlist.txt

or something close....

Should do it.

Thats close enough. It worked fine. thanks.
