Disk quotas

I've recently been trying to organise disk quotas via FSRM, ploughing through all the old Edugeek threads on the subject, and it sounds like a PITA, especially if you want notification with Windows XP clients. I can't be doing with this Samba nonsense, so I wrote off for a quote for a piece of software called Northern Technologies Quota Server which I used to use - it was a few hundred quid and worked really well.

 

They've just written back to explain that I would "only require the entry licence" @ £16,600+VAT, annual support costs £2772+VAT.

 

Isn't there a simple, affordable solution to this?

I'm not sure what you mean about FSRM? It takes hardly any time at all to set up? What's the issue you have with it?

(...I wrote to them as well, haven't heard back yet - they seem to be about the only other game in town, though I take the lack of prices on the website as a bad sign.)

Quota Server used to be a simple and effective solution for controlling the dense and uncooperative user base that represents the typical school. Every time you saved a document, there would be warnings on how much of your quota you'd used up when you were over a certain limit; when you'd exceeded the "hard" limit it would explain that you'd have to delete some files before you could save any more, there was web-based reporting, a no-brainer graphical interface on the server for setting and viewing quotas, etc. I guess I've been spoiled, and I'm sulking at having to go through threads like this in order to figure out how to provide even a basic notification...
