Identifying an AppleTV on a Wireless Network

Good afternoon,

 

I wonder if anyone knows how an Apple TV would identify itself to a wireless network so that wireless network could allow it through the authenticated proxy server without authentication (did that make sense?).

 

Our new BYOD system needs authentication so that school users log in through a captive portal.

 

Obviously the AppleTV doesn't suppore authentication through proxy servers so we need a way of identifying the device so the rules can be changed to let it through.

 

Any advice or pointers?

You should have the MAC address of the device and you can then set a DHCP reservation to give it a particular IP address.

Only thing I can find is :

The Apple TV does not support Proxy Server configuration (Apple TV: Connections through proxy servers are not supported). An alternative is to enable internet sharing on a computer and have the Apple TV connect to that computer.

 

 

This would only work if you had enough pc's / macs to do this with the amount of apple tv's you are thinking about and said pc's may need 2 network cards ( one to connect to your network and one to connect the apple tv to the pc / mac.

I think what Gareth is after is a way of identifying the device so that it can be routed so it doesn't actually go via the proxy (perhaps redirected to a transparent proxy instead).

Been chatting with him through pm and he advises that there is an aruba device that dishes out the dhcp network addresses ( not sure if there is any other info in regards to getting the aruba device to do dhcp reservations ). Think the LEA that manage / deal with the proxy server ( which I believe is ISA )

Why not put the crApple TVs on a seporate VLAN that routes directly. If your under the Aruba stuff it should be a simple case of setting up a seporate WLAN SSID and pointing it at a different VLAN.
