Hi Guys,

We need to move Solus 3 to a new admin server (with a different name) on a new domain. Does anybody know the benefits of migrating rather than installing a fresh database for Solus 3.

Does anybody have any notes for this procedure?

Cheers

Capita are in the process of writing the documentation to move SOLUS from one server to annother. On the 22nd May I was at apresenation where Jonathan Wood from Capita briefly showed us the draft of the document but has not shared this yet. Not knowing hoe many computers had and how easy your first install was. Having spoken to a few people at this meeting including Capita engineer that they found fresh install was alot easier.

We have completed a number of successful SOLUS3 server migrations, and have thus managed to refine our notes accordingly (however, we have not yet had to move SOLUS3 to a new domain):

Migration of SOLUS3 (Server with the same name)

1. If not present, download and install SQL Management Studio

2. Restore the latest SOLUS3 BACKUP via SQL management Studio

3. In Management Studio, expand the SOLUS3 Database > Security > Users and delete the 'domain\servername$' user.

4. Manually install the SOLUS3 service on the new server.

5. Manually install the SOLUS3 UI on the new server.

6. Run the SOLUS3 UI & re-register the site in the new UI.

7. Now to get the SOLUS3 agent installed onto the new server. In Management Studio, expand the SOLUS3 database > Tables, right click and select edit top 200 rows for the SOLUS3.Agent table. Find the old server in the list and in the agent_status cell for the old server, change the value from 2 (Offline) to 16 (Install Failed) and save.

8. In the SOLUS3 UI, under the SOLUS3 Agents screen, the old server's status should now be listed as 'Install Failed' allowing you to highlight it and click on Reinstall Agent. SOLUS3 will now reinstall the agent onto the new server and you won't lose any links that have been set up in the your enviroment.

Migration of SOLUS3 (Server with a different name)

7. Export and manually install the SOLUS3 Agent.

8. Now to get a SOLUS3 agent on the new server. In Management Studio, expand the SOLUS3 database > Tables, right click and edit top 200 rows for the SOLUS3.Agent table. Find the old server in the list and make a note of the GUID for the server name and copy this.

9. Go to c:\program files\Solus3\AgentService and edit the following file Sims.Solus3.Agent.AgentService.exe.config

10. Find where is says

You forgot about installing the S3 database bits so you get those funky tools. Also, if the servername changes, don't you want to update the clients agent config file ;)

Which tools? I thought all the tools required get installed from the installation of the services and clients?

Ooooops! Copy & Paste fail! :o

13. Run @matt40k's UpdateS3AgentDS.vbs script against all devices with S3 agents to point them to the new server.

Ohhhhh, an updated version! Seems I've been rolling with 1.0! :)

Haha, I need an auto-update tool :p

All the new version means is that you don't have to wait for a reboot.

So that's like a SOLUS3 tool for the SOLUS3 server migration tool! ;)
