Fast USB Boot Hard drive wipe software

Hi all,

 

We're leaving our current site this summer and selling off our ICT estate. I need a bootable USB tool to quickly wipe the hard drive contents.

 

The ones I've found seem to want to take between an hour and three and half hours for a "fast" 1 pass, copywipe, dbn, killdisk.

 

Any faster solutions out there. I really don't want to spent any large amount of time doing this. I suppose other option is to get 30 sticks and a room all in one bit go.

I assume a standard quick format is out of the question? Don't know if you will improve on those times if it is a full format that you want

Have a look at Create a DBAN USB Flash Drive from Windows | USB Pen Drive Linux. I put darik on and cd and use it from cd but usb is possible.

Thanks. It's dban I''m running currently and it looks like 40 min for 232gb hdd. most of our machines are about 40 - 100gb so this might be the best way forward.

The hard drives own internal secure erase function will be the fastest (faster than DBAN too). Instructions on how to do this can be found here.

You could boot the DBAN image over the network.

If you are booting off a disk with DBAN, once the wipe process has started you can move on. You don't need the disk as the whole thing lives in RAM.

 

Hard drive wipes are more dependent on the drive's speed and what erase method you're using. A quick zero-fill will be faster than multi-pass random-number fills.
