If this is happening because of the iPad, does it means that Apple will employ 27,000 people????

 

Nope, they'll hire a less than half that ammount in china, make them work much harder and pay them much less and replace them when they die of exaustion or an overdose of gravity from the top of their factory.

 

Besides hp gear is still good (corporate stuff) its just that the market share for PCs that can do stuff as opposed to sheep feeders is declining. That and they have had criminally stupid CEOs at least twice now, blowing epic time and money on a product they killed before giving it an chance then claiming that they were going to kill off the supply of the computer hardware that kept everyone interested in the company. They went through a period of trying to sabotage themselves really badly. To a large extent, it is their own fault.

There's a lot more to HP's bow than just tablets. Obviously there's all this talk about HP's future direction in the PC and printer business (in addition to it's place in the 'post-pc' business) and then there's stuff like the autonomy acquisition which is more of a 'services' play. So it's a pretty diverse business, i don't know whether they're trying to emulate IBM and the direction ibm took....but ibm has done that very well. It's kept it's big iron business, selling stuff like BI and Database systems on top of that hardware in addition to being a major player in services. But then a few years ago selling off the PC business to lenovo, which doesn't seem to be doing badly of late. Not a bad deal all in all. If you think about it HP have a lot of equivalent stuff to what IBM offers in the mid to high end, plus it's got a much larger installed base of regular x86 servers. And it has services through acquisition....it's a company that has got a leading position in a lot of markets through acquisition. When a company has such a diverse range of products and services it's bound to have some areas that are more profitable than others,

Precisely, and it is this diversity of products and services what allow then to still be on the market, but who knows for how long. There is always competition on this market but a lack of specialisation could be catastrophic. For example, If I think of Dell I think of laptops, if I think of Brother I think of printers, but HP brings to my mind lots of products and the impression that they just want to touch everything related to IT. To be honest only one of the products that they do is exceptional: switches. Maybe the printers as well, but only just.

 

Such a big amount of job cuts indicates a major re-structure on the business, something is going terrible wrong somewhere. As mentioned, Asia will digest the blow yet again
