Add AD users to OD group on OS X Lion server?

We have just upgraded from os X 10.5 server to Lion.

We completely flattened the server and installed from scratch. We have installed server and workgroup tools but we can't seem to add AD users to OD groups!

In the pic above we can select users from ldap or active directory at B but only ldap at A so we can drag users from my AD into the mac groups.

 

Can someone tell me what we are missing out?

is the server bound to AD, as if so at a you simply select the AD domain. and all groups and users listed.

 

B should remain on LDAP.

I know that's what should happen but there is no option to select AD at arrow A!

 

Another weird thing is that if you select AD groups at arrow B and then select on from the list it just disappears! we can select them one at a time and eventually they all disappear.

I'd be tempted to unbind, then bind again, it looks like it disconnects when clicked on.
