Selling domain names - what's it worth...?

A member of staff has been contacted by an IT training company asking if he'll sell them a domain name which he'd registered but hasn't used. He was wondering what he should ask...no idea...any guesses...? (Bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question I guess.)

It's kinda hard to say without knowing a) how big the company is / how new they are and b) how specific the domain name is ie how important it would be to them (what domain name is it, do you know?)

 

I guess he could either just pick a figure out of the air, and see what they say, or ask them to make him an offer (ie getting some idea of how much they actually want it).

Try somewhere like Sedo You'll see a huge difference in prices.

I sold one of my domains last year it was "thisis" domain when I bought it there was no thisislondon thisisplymouth etc later on I thought maybe I will get some big money for it, but it really depends on who wants it and if you can see its value on Sedo - The world's leading domain marketplace so can they. the guy I sold my site to thought he was going to make big money but he hasn't yet. I say if you are thinking of selling it then sell, nobody may want it and then its free when your ownership lapses.

Thanks for the link to Sedo. (The company asking for the domain is a large and well-established IT training company, and the domain is their name with .co.uk. At the moment they're having to use .ltd.uk.)

Not sure of the way it's done now - it's a few years since I registered domains... The training company could file a claim with Nominet and he may have to pay to defend his right to it... especially if it's nothing to do with his name or the purpose the site's being used for...

 

It used to cost about £1500 to file a claim, and I've heard it cost about the same to defend it... so he may be better trying to sell it before they go down that route...

About a thousand would seem reasonable for a company name. Maybe settle for 800 if they want to bargain.

 

I've bought and sold many domain names and they are worthless unless someone actually wants it. When they do want it though, you can charge them a fair bit

 

SEDO is useless as a website exchange to be honest, their estimates are bloated guesses at best.

I thought about selling my domain name - but I doubt anyoine would want it. I purchased indigo-cube.co.uk many moons ago - way before Barclay card launched indigo-square
