Start menu redirection - Programs with programs folder

Hello,

 

I have been trying to get start menu folder redirection working successfully on windows 7. It works perfectly on XP and the first logon works okay on 7. After the second logon the redirected shortcuts do not respond when clicked and the start menu closes. I have also noticed at the second logon that a additional programs folder appears in programs and this has all the shortcuts that are in the main programs and these work when clicked. My setup is as follows:

 

Server\netlogon\redirection\students\start menu\programs\ - various shortcuts in here.

Permissions are default permissions of netlogon folder.

Start menu redirection event log is successfull every logon.

I have tried a new group policy only with this in and blocked inheritance on the OU.

 

Have I missed something?

We had the same problem with the Start Menu when we moved from XP to Windows 7.

 

We resolved it by making a slight change to the redirection settings.

 

They are set now as follows:

 

Target tab:

 

Setting: Basic - redirect everyone's folder to the same location

 

Target folder location: Redirect to the following location

 

Root path: \\Server\Share\Desktop folder

 

Settings tab:

 

Only tick: Also apply redirection policy to Windows 2000, Windows 200o Server, Windows XP and Windows server 2003 operating systems.

 

Policy removal:

 

Select the radio button: Leave the folder in the new location when the policy is removed.

 

These settings work for us.

@DaveP Thanks for your reply. My settings are the same as yours in group policy. I have managed to fixed this now after much head scratching. I moved the start menu redirection folders to another share and it is now working okay. There must be some permission related problem with the netlogon folder.

I had the same thing on one of the networks I manage. I found that the problem occurred only when I have the share's permissions 'wrong'. If these are simply set to Everyone full control, folder redirection works fine. If they are set (as they were on the one network that had a problem) to Administrators full control, Everyone read, I got the extra Programs folder. By changing these permissions to Everyone full control (and relying upon the File level permissions to control access), everything works perfectly.

 

I have found other instances where share level permission do strange thing - to the extent of almost overriding what File level permissions should be allowing. These days, I tend to stick with Everyone full control on all shares unless there is a specific reason not to do so.

I hate to revive an old thread.. but just for anyone else hunting the web as to why shortcuts in the start menu dont work, or double programmes folder.. it was the share permissions for me! Students need full control! Then the security permission to stop them messing around!
