I've said it before and I'll say it again - DDoS is like a bunch of kids TP'ing someone's house. Moderately annoying, but ultimately serves no purpose.

Not to mention that Virgin Media being targeted for complying with a legal court order is a bit, let's just say, dumb.

DDoS attack - so not a proper hack then

Well, this is the media we're talking about...

Guessed passwords = Hacked

Guess PIN for answerphone = Hacked

DDoS = Hacked

Anything else electronic = Hacked

But to be honest, if they did say it was a DDoS attack, they'd then have to explain what that was - and most people won't read a headline that says "DDoS takes Virgin Website Offline". Give them "Virgin Media Hacked" and people will read it.

I dunno, giving them "Hundreds attack Virgin Media over TPB blocking" would work pretty well..

edit: I accidentally a word.

You also forgot:

Government website taken down = Government was hacked

Have some XKCD to show my point.

It was their main recruiting poster, hung up nearly ten feet up a wall! This means the hackers have LADDER technology! Are we headed for a future where everyone has to pay $50 for one of those locked plexiglass poster covers? More after the break ...

Its all about the propaganda really.

And it looks like it worked. We are talking about it :)

I was talking about it before it was cool. [/hipster]

to average joe user though it takes the site down it is to all intents and purposes hacking they wouldnt know what ddos was same as most people wouldnt know what 90% of the stuff in a cars engine bay does (id lay odds if i popper the bonnet and asked 10 random people to point out the turbo most would point to something else).

And I'm only talking about it ironically [/hipster]

Fixed :)

I understand they have to pull in readers.. It's just a shame when they have to lower their standards of reporting to do so. Either that, or they're not aware they're reporting inaccurately, in which case someone should banhammer them from the journalism industry (then again, if that were the case, we'd have no newspapers ever.. What would I read on the bus to work? D: Oh yeah.. I'd just browse Reddit..)

This is how I feel when I read stories on "trolling" [First thing I found.]

IT'S NOT TROLLING! THAT'S JUST BEING A TWISTED [censored]!

Real trolling doesn't rely on swearing and disturbing imagary being forced on people.

Trolling is a art.

dont know why their bothering, its not as though the "blocking" stopped anything at all with regards access to that particular site, its just paying lip service to the industry bodies crying afoul about "lost revenue" Edited by rich_tech

Totally.

@Garacesh No you are not the only one, so far they seem to be doing nothing except lets face it - being just as bad as the kids - tantrum time and throwing toys out of the pram.

I used to have sympathy for these kinds of people but you know that sympathy has all gone.

My sympathy disappeared when they attacked the Minecraft login servers, and the EVE online servers.

Website owners and switch makers could easily block a DDOS attack if they actually sat down and had a think about it.

Most of the time it doesn't come from a sophisticated botnet or anything like that. It comes from a few machines loading up LOIC.

LOIC, the "anonymous" DDoS tool that exposes whoever is contributing to an attack if they don't mask it via a proxy?
