Hi all,

 

Im going for an interview on wednesday for a server support role they were very interested in my linux experience which to be honest isnt extensive. Dont get me wrong I havnt lied but my experience is mainly desktop linux with a bit of cli thrown in.

 

Iv been brushing up on my linux

knowledge just wondered what peops think my focus should be?

It really depends on what they are doing with Linux. Any ideas?

It depends on what they want, if it's mainly software installation then it's going to be .conf files, understanding Symbolic linking, chmod/chown etc. if it's scripting then you need to brush up on bash/csh and the CLI tools like awk, grep. Lastly if it's administration/ops then you will need to understand the output from ps, job control with nice/renice and scheduling with crontab and connectivity with samba/nfs.

 

Then of course it could be a great big mix of all of the above like it is here!

Yeah and that's just the tip of the iceberg, you can do a lot with a Linux server.

You could be looking at command line installations of common bits, for instance lighttpd, apache, full lamp, mysql databases and knowing how to troubleshoot (logs) and how to manage the daemons. You could probably do with knowing grep and the basic commands to cpu usage, like top for instance on debian but there are many ways to skin a cat on unix.
