theeldergeek Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 My boss gets a bit fidgety because I log into a server to open/view DNS. He wants me to use MMC instead. I have no clue, can someone advise? The server is called EC-DNS1 (this is the server I normally log into and then access DNS off the START menu). I can run MMC on my local machine, but at that point I am clueless as to what I need to do next. Help!
DavidYoung Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Hi, You need to download the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) from Microsoft. Once you install that patch, you go into Programs and Features>Turn Windows Features on or off, and then enable the tools you need. Once you've done that, the Administrative Tools menu appears in Start and you can launch DNS from there. Regards David

Regards David At which point I realise I should have mentioned that I am running a client XP machine (SP3) and trying to open DNS and AD via MMC on the client. From what I can see via a Google search, Remote Server Administration Tools aren't available for XP Feeling clueless...

In that case, you need to download the Server 2003 Admin Pack: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3725. Some of the more advanced/newer stuff won't work between the 2 versions, but the standard things like DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, etc should. David
