I know teachers/pupils bringing in their own equipment has been discussed a lot so I thought I'd point this article out.

Ah ... you mean the Head of IT is saying it is costing *his* budget more ... the fact that it is saving other parts of the council significant money in running costs of buildings (rent, heating, maintenance, etc) is a mentioned fact but not quantified in the article. I had heard the SOCITM had reminded its members to ensure that if they are talking about cost (inc cost savings) it should be about the cost to the whole of their council and the taxpayer ...

 

Then again ... the article itself might be selective of the information given to them during the interview. No doubt there will be someone that asks for more real data to run the stats / analysis themselves.

We can't say that BYOD devices won't have any impact on the infrastructure of the network. Unless the devices connect completely on a 3G network or other provider that doesn't rely on the companies/school WiFi network.

 

What happens if a user brings in a laptop that the user says works perfectly at home but because they loaded AOL for instance won't work on the WiFi network. Or maybe I should correct this and say Internet Explorer wouldn't open correctly after AOL was loaded.

 

All I trying to say is make sure you're network infrastructure is setup for BYOD devices and you have polices in place to outline the support of these devices

Unless they all had PDP 11s or something on their desks it's a complete nonsense to imply BYOD is a pre-req for hot-desking, office space etc. That can happen without BYOD (and BYOD doesn't automatically deliver it) e.g. county here has long had all that with staff mostly working on county issued laptops. The exact same thing regarding increased mdm costs and increased help desk provisioning would have applied a few years ago when remote working solutions were being implemented/upgraded, and citrix licensing was the increased cost to the IT budgets at that time.

Agreed. I was involved in a rollout of a system that would allow hot desking. The company is in the process of rolling out 15,000 machines to do this. After rolling out 1,500 they saved au$7,000,000 because they where able to move out of an office building.
