Google Earth 4.1 Official released (MSI installer now)

Just thought I would let you all know. Google has released 4.1 in MSI form for site deployment (I have not tested msi yet).

This is great news for me, I always breath a sigh of relief when I see and MSI attached.

 

I think it would be useful for to have a list of programs that have MSI's readily available, in much the same way the Essential Software list is maintained.

Is the caching method still the same as the old version? i.e. a cache held locally on the hard drive. Or can it be networked into a shared cache?

 

Have you checked out http://local.live.com - it's Microsoft's mapping service that also has satellite images. It seems to have more detailed maps than Google, at least for the UK. Google Earth barely acknowledges the existance of Essex (now, don't be rude) but live has street level detail.

In some places it lets you tilt the map so you can see photographs of the sides of buildings - not like Google's CGI but actual photographs.

I used it with 15 kids on laptops and it din't grind to a halt so it's not too bandwidth hungry and/or our proxy can cache.

If you install the ActiveX control it lets do the flying in and out + 3D maps but, to be fair, it's not as cool as Google's.

local Live is an amazing resource for UK detail alone. As has been said on the other GE thread, there are a hell of a lot of educational applications to GE if you only have the staff capable of exploiting it!

Please could we stop suggesting alternates. We all know now about them all (and if we dont post a new thread) and this thread is related to the google earth 4.1 msi not what can replace it. Please stay on topic.

How do I extract the msi from the exe? Sorry i'm new.

When i copy the msi and files from the temp directory and use the 523ea15.msi /quiet . It installs, but it doesn't create program groups or desktop shortcuts for all users. Any advice?

Yes I have done this via Group Policy even though the original wasn't done with this method. Comes up with a message saying that you upgraded when you first log on but works a treat.

 

During the holiday break I installed Google Earth, Acrobat 8 and Quicktime via GP and they all went on okay. Acrobat 8 took the longest by a distance.
