What software do most Universities and Colleges use for...

I'm asking as I'm in a secondary school and we have a right mix match of software, and we'd like to conform with what the Universities and Colleges use. Especially with this whole new IT curriculum.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I suspect you should prepare yourself for a whole raft of Adobe licensing when it comes to creative courses.

As for programming, that would vary from course to course depending upon what a particular university was teaching.

I was expecting to hear something like that, we're just after basics so we're getting the kids prepared for further education.

I don't know about Uni but I know alot of pro video creators use avid.

when i was at uni 2 years ago they put two moduals of programing on one in c and one in C# but coladge taught us VB.Net which is a verry good starting point and the code is verry simaler if not the same to c#. they also taught us how to create webpages in notepad before moving to dreamwever and a little flash.

 

but i would probably recomend VB.net as a good starting ground i loved it when in coladge. BTW i didnt do a degree in programing it was in networking but there were overlaping moduals

I did *half* a film degree and the university I went to had both Avid and Final Cut Pro suites for video editing. For some reason the FCP suites were used pretty much exclusively by the documentary film students, and the Avid suites by the conventional film students (not sure if that reflects the industry standard). As for photo editing, I'd say Adobe Creative Suite all the way.

I'd suggest that it varies from establishment to establishment, and also to the precise course offered.

Currently we use:

1. Final Cut Pro (thought his may be changing, to either the avid package or Adobe premiere)

2. Dreamweaver

3. Visual Studio

4. Photoshop

I'm just after an average type of thing, so we can get in line with what Univerties are offering. For example, we're currently using Macromedia Dreamweaver MX...it's like 10 years old! We need to revamp.

I still have Dreamweaver MX disc and licenses! I'm using serif now (cheap and easy to deploy) Dreamweaver is a whole level of crapola to deploy and writes security crud into track zero on the HDD and messes things up.. yay!

We use Photoshop for our image editing in our design subject areas, the other subjects aren't really in use at our college due to being landbased primarily.

Instead of the full editions of Premire, Dreamweaver and the like that come with the full fledged suites what about the elements series. I know Adobe makes photoshop elements and Premier elements, you can even buy the two as a set. Not at all sure if you can get a site license for them, but it might be worth a shot.

 

Also they cost a lot less, Amazon has a boxed set of both for $113.

If you could out fit a lab with the software rather than every student computer it could add up even if you have to buy a box for every install.

Those have mentioned will do in School.So, be prepared for that software.You need to analyze it to move great effort.
