leepearson1 Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Hi guys, hope you may be able to help on this matter we have a few indepedant running zoo storm fizzbooks, and currently have an issue with one and its sriving me mad, it came to me as the hardrive kept clicking, so i removed in and re inserted it and it was up and running again, ran disk check etc, all appeared fine, until a few weeks later it did the same. SO to cut a long story short i ordered a new hardrive, and its now doing the same again, but if its removed and insterted again its boots up and runs fine? what can be the problem? woudl it be a faulty motherboard?etc? thanks in advance
synaesthesia Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Quite likely will be, yes; have you run any checks whilst it's still clicking, using the HDD manufacturers diagnostic utility?
tom_newton Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Any performance issues during the clicking? Some HDs have a "head park" util which stows the disk head if it detects vibration. I once had to get a toshiba lappy to tone its life down as it was doing this if you so much as looked at it, causing it to take 45 mins to boot! Could be a faulty vibration sensor - if so you might see if you can turn of that feature.
leepearson1 Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 the clicking only seems to start after when you come to boot the laptop, it will get to bios and then the hardrive will click, but it does seem during normal use a little slower than normal, ie a little laggy, even though its had a re-install
tom_newton Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Any fun looking options in bios for this sort of feature maybe?
localzuk Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Try running this on your machine and see if it finds any faults with your hard disk - PassMark DiskCheckup - SMART hard drive monitoring utility
Midget Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Did it happen the first time you time you installed the new hard drive? basically I'm asking if the laptop's been dropped. What make are the HDDs?
leepearson1 Posted April 20, 2012 Author Posted April 20, 2012 The hdds are both samsung 1.8 zif drives. No it didnt happen the first time i installed the new drive, I thought the laptop could have been dropped on the first time, but just very weird that its doing the same, i can disconnect the hdd and connect again and it will work fine, for a random about of time, it cam be weeks or days before it does it again. some times if you turn in on and off a few times eventually it will boot up the hardrives are ok, so not sure where to look now really, or just basically bin the damm thing
Midget Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 Bin it, they weren't exactly the best made drives around. You could grab Victoria Hard Drive Diagnostics utility and check for bad/slow sectors.
